New Outdoor Archery Practice Location

We must move the location for our outdoor Archery practices due to new construction work in our usual practice area.

We will be shooting in the area east of the McKee Building just inside the black fencing. Click on the map for more detail. The best place to park is on the east end of the McKee Building 4-H parking lot.

Revised .22 Rifle Practice Plans for May 22

Because the weather is not in our favor this weekend, we have come up with an alternate plan for practice. We will be utilizing the Exhibit Hall at the McKee Building. Relay times will stay the same.

Here is what will be different:

  1. We will be using air rifles for our live fire portion. For those that already do air rifle with 4-H, you may bring your own. For those who do not have an air rifle, we will have county rifles to use. We will not do full shooting timed relays so you can just work on positions as you choose.

  2. We will be adding a workshop portion to this practice so do bring your .22 rifles to practice positions, natural point of aim, etc.

  3. We will be able to handle 20 more members! We would like to prioritize members who have the fewest practices. If you have already attended 3 or more practices, please wait until Saturday afternoon to sign up to give others a chance first. Check your email to find the SignupGenius link.

Thank you all for your understanding and working with us on this alternate practice format. If you have questions please do not hesitate to reach out to Sam and Ian Webb.

Record Book and Project Workshops 2022

We offer workshops to walk you through filling out the record book and creating your project. These are very helpful presentations. You can bring your project and record book and ask all of your questions.

We are hosting three workshops at the McKee Building this year:

  • May 20, 6:30 p.m. – Shooting Sports Record Book Workshop: Understand the Record Book, What is a “Project”?

  • June 17, 6:30 p.m. – Shooting Sports Record Book and Project Workshop: Answer Questions about Completing the Record Book, Projects, and Registering Your Project for Fair

  • July 22, 6:30 p.m. – Shooting Sports Project Workshop: Review Record Book and Project, Talk about Fair Interview Judging Day

You can find more information about projects and the record book (including the Word and PDF version of the e-Record Book) by visiting the Projects page.

Archery Practices Move Outdoors

The Ranch

Beginning next week on May 19, archery practices at the Ranch will move outdoors on Thursday evenings. Meet us in the field east of the McKee Building.

We appreciate families arriving 15 minutes early to help us set up the range, and staying to help take down targets at the end. Practice runs from 6:00–8:00 p.m., and no new members will be checked in after 7:15 p.m. Bring your own chairs, sunscreen, and water.

Lon Hagler

The High Country Handiworkers 4-H Club also offers an additional opportunity to practice beginning on Tuesday, May 17. These club-hosted practices are at 6:00 p.m. at the Lon Hagler Archery Range, 4401 West County Road 16 in Loveland. Equipment will NOT be available for members to borrow at these practices. Members can count two of these practices toward the four required to participate in the county shoot for Archery. Please note that Lon Hagler is a Colorado State Wildlife Area, therefore anyone 16-years or older MUST have a fishing license, hunting license, or SWA pass with a habitat stamp to be on the property. Those 65 and older do not require a habitat stamp. Those under the age of 16 do not require a license. More information about State Wildlife Areas and requirements is available on the Colorado Parks and Wildlife website.

The 4-H Shooting Sports dress code will be enforced at both sites. Remember that shorts must be mid-thigh length or longer, shoes must be closed-toe (no Crocs or Keens), and shirts must have sleeves.

More information including maps and calendars with dates for upcoming practices is available under Archery.

2022 Shooting Sports Enrollment Numbers

Our Shooting Sports program has grown this year! We have a total of 274 members, many of whom are enrolled in multiple disciplines.

Due to large enrollment numbers, some adjustments have been necessary to ensure our practices are manageable and safe. For example, indoor Archery practices were split into two hours using last names, and .22 Rifle has limited practice signups.

Keep in mind that the Shooting Sports superintendents and leaders are volunteers. They share hours of their time and years of their expertise with our program. However, if we don’t have enough leaders available, it can affect how many members can be shooting at practice, and whether we can safely host practice at all.

This is a great time to become a 4-H volunteer. Once you’ve completed the process, ask the discipline superintendent how you can be helpful at practices this year. And if you decide you’d like to be a certified Shooting Sports leader, you’ll be able to register for the training next Spring right away. Click here for information on how to begin.

Sign Up for “Remind” Alerts

All of our Shooting Sports disciplines use Remind to send alerts for cancellations and other important alerts. This is the main avenue of communication. When possible, we also post to social media and our website, and the extension office might send an email if it’s during office hours. But Remind is the first line of communication.

You can choose to receive alerts via text messages, email, the Remind app, or any combination of the three. Be sure to choose each Shooting Sports discipline your family is involved in to receive its messages.

Click here to find detailed instructions for each discipline.

Please Note: Our Remind account will NOT allow members under the age of 13 to join.

Visit remind.com for details about the app and alerts.

Archery Indoor Practices Split on May 10

Due to the large number of members participating in the archery program this year, we need to make some adjustments to our indoor practice schedule to accommodate the shooters safely in the limited space available.

We will continue the split practice for our last practice indoors on Tuesday, May 10th. This seems to be working well at having a manageable group for the space available. Please only attend your designated hour so all will have an enjoyable, safe practice. See the schedule below.

May 10

  • 6:00–7:00 p.m. Last names beginning A–K

  • 7:00–8:00 p.m. Last names beginning L–Z

If you are in the 6:00 time slot, please arrive 15 minutes early to help set up the range. If you are in the 7:00 time slot, please remain to help tear down the range. It should take only about 15 minutes for each set-up and tear-down.

Once we move outside on May 19th, we'll have plenty of room to accommodate everyone at practice, plus 3D targets.

We look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday night.
