Archery County Shoot Information

Just a few notes for the Archery County Shoot on Sunday, August 2.

Location

The shoot will be located at Swift Ponds, the Colorado Youth Outdoors Facility, at 4927 East County Road 36, Fort Collins.

Enter the facility from the entrance on County Road 5 and head west on the dirt road. Park on the south side of the main building. Walk through the building to the north to find the archery range.

Attendance

Only individuals who signed up via the SignUpGenius may observe. All others may not attend to keep our attendance numbers under the maximum requirements.

Once shooting is completed you will need to check out and exit the grounds.

What to Bring

Chairs—there is no place to sit.

Water and your own snacks, if needed.

Sunscreen.

Bug spray.

6 arrows. Archers will shoot five arrows at a time, and the extra arrow will be kept in a bucket on the range in case of a lost or damaged arrow.

Wear clothing that meets the 4-H and Shooting Sports dress code.

Masks are required for 4-H members and their families.

What to Expect

Arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled time and have your equipment prepared to begin. It Is likely that the competition could run ahead of schedule.

During check-in, all bows will be inspected.

Communication between parents and shooters is not allowed once the competition has commenced. No coaching during the shoot.

Each member will shoot a practice round at 20 yards. Then the shooting order is 40 yards, 30 yards, 20 yards, 10 yards. Each member will shoot 5 arrows per distance. Senior members will shoot 5 arrows at each distance twice for a total of 10 arrows per distance and 40 arrows total. Juniors shoot 5 arrows per distance for a total of 20 arrows.

There will be separate ranges set up for the Junior members and the Senior members.

If an arrow misses a target, there will be limited time to look for the arrow. Time will be set aside later to look again.

Shooters may use binoculars.

There will be no 3D round in this year’s competition.

Scoring Help

We need adults to help with scoring the juniors. Training will be provided. If we don’t have adults to score, this will hold the competition up. In the past, the members have scored themselves. However, due to our limited time this year, we did not have the opportunity to practice scoring at practices.

Results

Results will be posted on the Results page on the Shooting Sports website by the end of the day on August 3.

Most importantly, have fun at county shoot!

2020 State Shooting Sports Championships

As you know, the in-person events in Pueblo and Colorado Springs were canceled this year. When this was announced, we shared that other options were being explored. And now we can provide details about the alternative events.

The 2020 Colorado State 4-H Shooting Sports Championships Alternate Format will be a postal match. Each county will host its own “state shoot” contest. The targets and scorecards will be provided to the State 4-H Shooting Sports Committee. This will be the qualifying event for Colorado 4-H Teams who will attend the 2021 National 4-H Shooting Sports Championships. National qualifiers will be determined as stated in the rule book unless otherwise noted in the information below.

The dates for Larimer County 4-H State Shoots are as follows:

  • Shotgun: August 18 from 5–8 p.m. and August 25 from 5–8 p.m. at Great Guns in Nunn

  • Archery: August 22 from 8 a.m.–2 p.m. at The Ranch in Loveland

  • .22 Rifle: August 29 from 8:00 a.m.–1:30 p.m. at Clausen Ranch in Masonville

  • Muzzleloading: August 29 from 2:30–4:30 p.m. at Clausen Ranch in Masonville

  • Air Rifle/Air Pistol: August 30 from 8 a.m.– 2 p.m. at Clausen Ranch in Masonville

  • .22 Pistol: September 5 from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. at Great Guns in Nunn

Information about State Shoot registration and practices leading up to the state shoots will be provided soon.

If you qualify at county shoot and have met the requirements for entering and receiving a red or blue ribbon on your project, you will have until August 6, 2020 to confirm your plans with the discipline superintendent to participate in the state shoot. The registration fee is $20 per participant. No class fees will be charged.

Revisions for State Shoot Courses of Fire

Some disciplines have a revised course of fire for this year’s state shoot. (Our county shoots are mirroring these alterations.) Click here for the Colorado State Championships Rule Book mentioned below.

  • .22 Rifle:  No course of fire changes from the rule book.

  • .22 Pistol:  No course of fire changes from the rule book.

  • Air Rifle:  No course of fire changes from the rule book.

  • Air Pistol:  No course of fire changes from the rule book.

  • Muzzleloader: No course of fire changes from the rule book. (If necessary, a standard clay shotgun target suspended 24" off the ground may be used in place of a muzzleloader gong. It must be placed at the required distance listed in the rule book.)

  • Archery:  No 3D targets are included in the contest.  Modified FITA courses of fire will be followed as listed in the rule book. Seniors will shoot the Modified FITA course of fire twice, for a total of 40 shots. Juniors will shoot 5 arrows per distance for a total of 20 shots. Tiebreakers will be followed according to the state contest rule book with the second round of FITA replacing the 3D score for seniors. Junior ties will be broken following the rule book.  If a tie still remains, the highest scores per distance beginning at 40 yards then 30, 20, and 10 will be used to break the tie in place of the 3D scores.

  • Shotgun:  No Sporting Clays will be included in the contest. The Skeet class will consist of 3 rounds of 25 targets shot in sequence for a total of 75 targets. The Trap class will consist of 3 rounds of 25 targets shot in sequence for a total of 75 targets. The Orion Scoring System will be used to break all ties up to 74 hits. If a competitor hits 75 targets straight, they are to shoot another full round of 25 targets while keeping score on a printable Orion scorecard. If the competitor does not miss, repeat the process until the competitor misses a target during a complete 25 target round. Combined scores for trap and skeet will be used to determine the 2021 national qualifiers.

Archery County Shoot and State Shoot Changes for 2020
archery state shoot.jpg

For the 2020 County Shoot on August 2 held at Colorado Youth Outdoors/Swift Ponds and the State Shoot (date to be determined held at The Ranch), members will NOT be shooting a 3D round.

The State Shoot will be held in Larimer County for the participants who qualify to compete as the Larimer County state team. Each county with members of a state team will shoot within their own county. Because of this, the 3D was eliminated so all team members will compete at the same FITA distances and course of fire.

A modified FITA course of fire will be followed as listed in the rule book.

  • Seniors will shoot 5 arrows at each FITA distance (40, 30, 20, and 10 yards) in two rounds for a total of 40 shots and a total possible score of 400.

  • Juniors will shoot 5 arrows at each FITA distance (40, 30, 20, and 10 yards) in one round for a total of 20 shots and a total possible score of 200.

Archers should be prepared to have 6 arrows for the shoot—5 arrows will be in the quiver and one in the bucket in case it’s needed.

We may need parents to help with scoring on the Orion cards, especially for the junior participants who have not had the opportunity to learn how they work this year. We will happily train adults, so please keep this in mind.
