What are the County Shoots?

During the month of July, disciplines will hold a county shoot for all eligible and interested members. This is a fun competition and not a requirement to complete the Shooting Sports project. However, participation is encouraged because it is a good way to showcase your skills and measure your progress.

Don’t be intimidated—the competitions are divided by age division (juniors ages 8–13 and seniors ages 14–18) and by classes based on equipment. If you are a brand new 8-year-old 4-H member, you will NOT be competing against senior members who have been shooting for 10 years.

What are the requirements to participate in County Shoot?

  • Complete the orientation process,

  • Attend a minimum of four required practices for the discipline(s) you are enrolled in,

  • Register for each discipline’s county shoot before its deadline. (Registration will be on SignUpGenius and will open soon on June 17. Watch for the link!)

County shoots also serve as qualifiers for the Colorado State 4-H Shooting Sports Championships (referred to as the State Shoot). Counties across Colorado send their teams of 6 members (5 members for Shotgun) per age division and class to compete in Pueblo, Colorado City, and Colorado Springs on August 17–18 and August 31–September 1. (Schedules for state shoot are posted on each discipline page under Competitions, but specific relay times will not be available until state shoot registration for each member is completed in early August.)

What are the requirements to participate in State Shoot?

  • Submit your hunter education card by July 1, 2024 to info@LC4HSS.org,

  • Commit to being willing and able to travel to the state shoot, should you qualify, on your county shoot registration on SignUpGenius,

  • Participate in the scheduled county shoot and qualify in the top 6 in your age division and class (top 5 for Shotgun),

  • Exhibit your project and record book at the county fair and earn a blue or red ribbon,

  • Pay the state entry fees.

More details are included under each discipline’s page. If you have more questions, please feel free to email info@LC4HSS.org anytime. We’ll be happy to help!

Weld County 4-H Shooting Sports Invitational 2024

The Weld County 4-H Shooting Sports Council is hosting an invitational on June 1–2, 2024. This is a great opportunity to gain competition experience before the county shoots in July.

Counting the Invitational as Practice

This 4-H Invitational will count as one practice per discipline for Larimer County 4-H Shooting Sports members participating on June 1: Archery, .22 Rifle, .22 Pistol, Muzzleloading.

Members must check in with one of the Larimer County 4-H key leaders present (Ian Webb or Rod Bergstorm) and complete one class per discipline to count as a practice for the discipline.

(At this time, we do not have Larimer County 4-H leaders attending on June 2 to allow members to count Air or Shotgun as practices. If that changes, we will revise this post information.)

If you have any questions, please email info@lc4hss.org.
