Outdoor Skills Upcoming Schedule and Updates

Here is the tentative schedule for our 4 remaining practices as promised:

  • May 25 –  Animal ID (bring supplies to take notes!)

  • June 15 – Map work

  • July 13 – Compass work

  • July 27 – Fire building (upon approval)

The practice originally scheduled for June 29 has been CANCELED as I will be volunteering at the National 4-H Shooting Sports Championships.

Be sure you are signed up for Remind messages (@4HOUTDRLC). Feel free to share the Remind info with other family members and Outdoor Skills members so everyone can get these messages easily. For more information about signing up, click here here.

Lastly, I know some members are interested in attending the state competition for Outdoor Skills this year, if you are interested, please let me know! Plans are not yet finalized for this competition, but it looks like it will be held either September 16 or September 23 in Jefferson County. I am working to get more details about this so I can update those who are interested ASAP.

This Saturday, May 13 starting at 8:00 a.m. the Big Thompson Bowhunters are hosting their annual workday at the Dennis Hansen Archery Range at Lon Hagler. They have invited 4-H members to volunteer for a community service project to help paint the park benches and picnic tables.

The first workshop will cover the Record Book (e-Record). We’ll go through it page by page with tips and tricks to help you complete it.

Friday, June 23, 2023 at 6:30 p.m.

During the second workshop, we will talk about project ideas and how to be sure that your project meets the requirements.

Wednesday, July 12, 2023 at 6:30 p.m.

At the last workshop, we will help you put the final touches on your project and your record book.

Archery Practices Beginning Outdoors on May 4

Archery practices are beginning outdoors on Thursdays at 6:00 p.m. in the field to the east of the McKee Building at The Ranch. Please either arrive a little early to help set up, or plan to stay at the end to help tear down. We will bring out the fun 3D targets as well, but that means more to set up!

Following is a map of the location at The Ranch. Enter through Gate 6 and park to the west of the practice area. Be careful about traffic—construction is using this access road as well.

Cancellations: Be sure to sign up for Remind. If the weather requires us to cancel, this is how we’ll alert families. Click here to learn how to sign up for Remind alerts.

.22 Rifle Outdoor Practice Signup

Due to the large number of members and limited space at the range, .22 Rifle requires members to sign up to participate in practices.

A SignUpGenius has been sent via email to the .22 Rifle member families for practices on April 30 and the month of May. Please note the restrictions that allow members to sign up for ONE RELAY per day, and TWO PRACTICES total on the signup.

Please check your email for information and the SignUpGenius link. If you did not receive it, please reach out to the .22 Rifle key leaders or email info@lc4hss.org.

.22 Rifle Range Workday on April 22

We have some work to do at the range before outdoor practices begin, so a work day has been scheduled on April 22 at 10 a.m. to get these projects done. This will be a "many hands make light work" type of effort and we'll have leaders to help guide each project. Primary items will be resetting the line, getting the new storage container painted and fitted out, and re-organizing the port-a-potties.

This is a great opportunity for members to get some community service time.

If you have questions, please feel free to reach out to Ian at irwebb@gmail.com or 970-214-5646.

Thank you all for pitching in to help get the range ready for our outdoor practices.
